For about ten weeks now, sophomores at LRCA have been in deep discussions of what it means to be created in God’s image. The theological term is Imago Dei. ALL people are created in the image of God. Genesis 1:26-28 tells us that men and women were created by God, in His image, to have a part in creating order in our world. We are created to cultivate – to be fruitful. 

We studied The Nicene Creed and the orthodox definition of the Trinity. We are created to be relational – in communion with God and with other people. It is not good to be alone. 

The book of Genesis provides a foundation for our faith and also introduces us to the fathers of our faith. Human faith is not perfect. Early on, humans took their eyes off of God and listened to lies. We were deceived into thinking that God isn’t really good. That He doesn’t want good for us.  

Thus, the cycle of sin began, and yet God’s character never changes. His love for His people never fails. He is faithful even when we doubt and get distracted. While there are severe consequences for our sin, God shows mercy over and over again. Ultimately, Jesus Christ bears the penalty for our sin on the Cross and redeems his broken creation. And, we now live in a time when we who have been redeemed are to share that good news with others. We get to be part of reconciliation – making things right.

We are finishing the month of October with the story of Joseph. God uses all kinds of characters in this beginning book of His grand story. From Adam and Eve… to Noah… to Abraham and Sarah… to Jacob and his sons, God is faithful. He uses men and women who don’t have much to offer, who are afraid and make mistakes, and calls them to go on a mission. He gives them everything they need. God reconciles them to Himself and He causes them to reconcile with each other. 

LRCA ends October with Warrior Blitz, one of my favorite events, where we celebrate generosity. Since 1977, men and women have given above and beyond to the purpose of building a school based on excellence in the pursuit of truth from a Christ-centered worldview. It’s why I get to be with students every day. During the week of Blitz, my BWV classes are focusing on what it means to serve each other, in Christian community, through forgiveness and reconciliation… only fitting as we end our module on the Patriarchs.
